Comedian Lee Soo-ji Talks About Her Viral 'Daechi Mom' Parody

Comedian Lee Soo-ji has recently gained attention for her parody video of the 'Daechi Mom' phenomenon, expressing her disappointment over the misunderstandings and pressures that have arisen from it. During her appearance on KBS Cool FM's 'Oh My Girl Hyojeong's Volume Up' on March 5, she discussed the viral success of her YouTube channel 'Hot Issue Ji,' which has amassed 600,000 subscribers. Lee mentioned that there was a light-hearted agreement to celebrate reaching 1 million subscribers with a beef dinner. Initially, she thought a few thousand subscribers would be a good start, but the overwhelming response has made her cautious about staying grounded.
Regarding her various character portrayals in her videos, Lee stated, "I put the same effort into each character. When I created the 'Daechi Mom' character, I intended it to be a nostalgic memory for the upload day. However, the unexpected reaction has led to some misunderstandings and pressures that I find unfortunate." She added that each character reflects either people around her or aspects of herself.
The 'Daechi Mom' parody, released on February 4, has garnered approximately 8 million views as of March 6. In the video, Lee plays the mother of a child attending an English kindergarten, dressed in an expensive Moncler jacket and carrying a Chanel bag. After dropping her child off at a private academy in a Porsche, she quickly eats a piece of kimbap in the car.
While the video resonated with many as a humorous take on the typical affluent mothers seen in the Gangnam area, some critics argued that it mocked dedicated parents. Additionally, there were speculations that the video targeted actress Han Ga-in, who had previously shared her own child’s academy experiences, leading to a wave of negative comments on her YouTube channel, prompting her production team to make the video private.
