Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu Under Investigation for Drugged Driving Allegations

The police have announced that comedian Lee Kyung-kyu (이경규), aged 65, is under investigation for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs. They clarified that even if the substances in question are legally prescribed, it could still constitute a violation of the law.
During a regular press briefing held on June 9 in Seodaemun-gu, a representative from the National Police Agency stated, "We are currently in the pre-charge investigation phase. Lee claims to have taken medication prescribed by a hospital, and we will verify this information."
The representative further explained, "According to traffic laws, even if a drug is prescribed, one should not drive if it poses a risk of impairing their ability to operate a vehicle. The criteria for determining drugged driving is whether the individual is in a state that prevents normal driving."
The police plan to confirm Lee's claims regarding his prescribed medication by reviewing surveillance footage and statements from witnesses.
On June 8, around 2 PM, Lee was involved in an incident where he mistakenly drove another person's vehicle that was similar to his own due to a parking attendant's error. This led to a report of suspected vehicle theft, prompting police to conduct a drug test, which returned a positive result. Consequently, the police initiated an investigation for a potential violation of traffic laws.
In an interview with YTN on June 9, Lee stated, "The positive drug test result was due to my anxiety medication and cold medicine that I was taking."
