Comedian Lee Kyung-kyu Charged with Drugged Driving

On July 2, 2025, renowned comedian Lee Kyung-kyu (이경규), aged 65, was handed over to prosecutors on charges of driving under the influence of drugs. The Gangnam Police Station in Seoul reported that Lee was charged with violating traffic laws. The incident occurred on June 8 when Lee mistakenly drove another person's vehicle in a hospital parking lot, leading to a theft report. A preliminary drug test conducted at the scene returned a positive result. Lee's representatives stated that he confused the other vehicle for his own, as they were identical in make, model, year, and color, and claimed he had only taken prescribed cold and anxiety medication.
The preliminary test revealed the presence of benzodiazepines, a type of psychoactive drug. However, a subsequent detailed examination by the National Forensic Service found no other substances. Despite this, traffic laws prohibit driving under the influence of any medication that could impair driving ability. CCTV footage from the day of the incident showed Lee lightly colliding with a stationary bus and hitting a wall at a car wash before visiting the hospital. Based on this evidence, police concluded that Lee's ability to drive was compromised due to the medication, leading to his referral to prosecutors.
Lee acknowledged his negligence, admitting that taking anxiety medication before driving was a mistake. His agency, ADG Company, released a statement on social media on June 26, emphasizing the importance of not driving while unwell, regardless of medication status, and noted that Lee deeply regrets causing concern due to his carelessness.
