Chungbuk National University President Dismissed Over Misuse of Funds

Kim Yong-soo, the president of Chungbuk National University (충북도립대), has been officially dismissed amid allegations of misusing university funds. The Chungbuk provincial government confirmed on July 4 that the decision to terminate Kim's position has been finalized. This follows a ruling by the special disciplinary committee for public universities in Chungbuk on June 27, which recommended his dismissal.

In connection with the controversy surrounding a lavish training trip to Jeju Island, three professors who accompanied Kim have received a three-month suspension. Additionally, another professor involved in misconduct related to a workshop has been suspended for one month.

The provincial government is now in the process of selecting a successor for the vacant president position at Chungbuk National University.

The controversy erupted after Kim and three professors spent five days in Jeju in February, during which they reportedly stayed at a five-star hotel and incurred expenses totaling 50 million KRW (approximately $42,000), leading to accusations of a 'luxurious training trip.' It was also revealed that Kim brought his spouse along on this official trip.

There are further allegations that the university falsified documents to suggest that over ten individuals participated in the training. The Office for Government Policy Coordination conducted an investigation that confirmed these findings and recommended disciplinary action to the Chungbuk provincial government. In response, the provincial authorities initiated their own investigation and referred the matter to the police.
