Choi Woo-shik Considers Role in Anticipated Drama 'Whale Star'

Actor Choi Woo-shik is reportedly reviewing a script for the upcoming drama 'Whale Star' (고래별), which is generating significant buzz. Based on a popular webtoon of the same name, the series is set during the Japanese occupation of Korea and draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, 'The Little Mermaid'. The webtoon has a massive fanbase in South Korea, and interest in the drama has surged since its adaptation was announced.

The comprehensive content studio Take One Studio recently unveiled its production lineup, with 'Whale Star' receiving the most attention. The webtoon, which won the Presidential Award at the 2021 Korea Content Awards, is currently in the final stages of casting and scheduling, with preparations for filming underway.

'Whale Star' tells a romantic story against the backdrop of the anti-Japanese movement during the occupation, focusing on a man named Kang Yi-hyun, who dedicates everything to his country, and a woman named Su-a, who risks her life to protect him. The drama is directed by Hur Jin-ho, known for acclaimed works like 'Spring Days' (봄날은 간다) and 'August's Christmas' (8월의 크리스마스), while cinematography is handled by Choi Yoon-man, recognized for his work on 'My Mister' (나의 아저씨).

Choi Woo-shik is set to portray Kang Yi-hyun, who, after witnessing the massacre of Koreans during the Kanto Earthquake, decides to become an independence activist. His character forms a special bond with Su-a, a 17-year-old girl working as a servant for a pro-Japanese landlord during this tumultuous period.

Choi Woo-shik gained global fame for his role in Bong Joon-ho's 'Parasite' (기생충) and has been actively involved in various projects, including the drama 'Our Beloved Summer' (그 해 우리는) and the Netflix series 'Murderous Affair' (살인자ㅇ난감). He is also set to appear in the upcoming SBS drama 'Universe Mary Me' (우주메리미).
