Chinese National Sentenced to 16 Years for Girlfriend's Death in Jeju

A 30-year-old Chinese national, identified as A, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, B, following a brutal two-hour assault. The Jeju District Court's Criminal Division 2, presided over by Judge Lim Jae-nam, delivered the verdict on June 19, 2025.
The incident occurred on January 22, when A, under the influence of alcohol, attacked B in their studio apartment in Jeju City, believing she was involved with another man. Witnesses reported hearing sounds of a struggle and B's screams, with one neighbor recalling that the cries for help lasted for over two hours, suggesting that B may have lost consciousness during the ordeal.
Despite B being in a state of shock after the assault, A reportedly did not attempt to assist her and instead fell asleep next to her. It was only later, when he failed to wake up, that he contacted the police through a Korean colleague.
While A admitted to the assault that led to B's death, he denied any intent to kill. However, the court emphasized that the crime of murder does not require a premeditated plan, stating that if a person can foresee the potential for death or harm from their actions, they can be charged with murder.
