Chinese Embassy Issues Warning to Students After Drone Incident

On July 1, it was confirmed that the Chinese Embassy in South Korea has issued a warning to its students regarding the illegal use of drones and the photographing of sensitive military facilities in Korea. This announcement follows the recent arrest of a Chinese student who was caught illegally filming U.S. military installations using a drone.

In a post titled 'Summer Safety Guidelines for Chinese Students' shared on social media, the embassy outlined general precautions and emphasized the importance of adhering to local laws when taking photographs. They specifically cautioned against using drones, stating, "Photographing military bases and facilities without permission is strictly prohibited under Korean law. Be mindful not to take photos in sensitive areas such as no-fly zones and restricted filming zones."

This warning appears to be a direct response to the arrest of three Chinese students in Busan on June 26, who were charged with illegally filming U.S. military facilities with a drone. The Busan police applied charges of espionage and violations of military base laws against the main suspect, identified as Student A, marking the first time such charges have been applied to foreigners in this context.

The suspects are accused of using a drone to capture images of the naval base and the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a 100,000-ton aircraft carrier, from March 2023 to June 2024 near the Naval Operations Command in Busan.
