Chef Ahn Yoo-sung Provides Culinary Support to Families Affected by Jeju Air Tragedy
Chef Ahn Yoo-sung has stepped up to support the families affected by the Jeju Air tragedy by offering his culinary skills. On December 31, during an appearance on SBS Radio PowerFM's 'Cultwo Show' (두시탈출 컬투쇼), he shared his experience of delivering 200 servings of kimbap to the bereaved families at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do on December 30.
When asked how he ended up at Muan Airport, Chef Ahn expressed, "I felt overwhelmed and couldn't focus on anything. I thought about how I could help, and since my only talent is cooking, I quickly prepared kimbap and went to them." He added, "I wanted to see how I could continue to assist them. I felt a strong pull to go there, and seeing the situation in person was heart-wrenching."
He also mentioned that he had a personal connection to the tragedy, stating, "A PD I worked with on a show also passed away, which is very sad and frustrating."
Regarding the conditions at Muan Airport, he noted, "The families are temporarily living in tents. I delivered the kimbap to them, and they seemed exhausted and lacking energy. When I offered them the kimbap, they said it was delicious. Since cooking is my only skill, I hope to provide some comfort through food and plan to visit them regularly. Even a small piece of kimbap might help them regain some strength."
Chef Ahn plans to return to the airport on January 1, stating, "I want to help them during this difficult time. I initially intended to serve tteokguk (rice cake soup), but I will prepare 300 bowls of abalone porridge instead. Many chefs from 'Black and White Chef' (흑백요리사) will also join in."
In closing, Chef Ahn emphasized the importance of public support during such tragedies, saying, "When people go through major accidents or hardships, they often say that the greatest strength comes from the public's concern. Many have managed to endure because of that support. What is most urgently needed now is for the public to continue showing interest and providing encouragement. I hope to be there to help, even if just a little, through food."
