The chairman of South Korea's largest karaoke franchise has been accused of repeatedly sexually harassing female employees. On July 15, former employees B (31) and C (27) filed a complaint against Chairman Kim at the Suwon Police Station, alleging that he engaged in inappropriate physical contact with them. So far, over ten current and former employees have come forward with similar claims.

According to the allegations, between May and June, Chairman Kim touched B's buttocks and shoulders on multiple occasions. B, who worked at the franchise for four years, resigned on July 1. C reported that from August 2023 to February 2024, she was also subjected to unwanted touching by Kim in empty rooms at the store, including her shoulders, waist, and buttocks. C left the company in April after five years of employment.

Both women expressed feelings of severe shame and fear of retaliation from Kim, who they described as ruling the company like a king. They stated that they felt unable to speak out while employed but decided to file a complaint after leaving the company.

Kim's representatives have denied the allegations, claiming that he has never engaged in any inappropriate contact with female employees.

Chairman of Major Karaoke Franchise Accused of Sexual Harassment

In the heart of The Hague, Netherlands, lies the Lee Joon Memorial Hall, dedicated to the memory of Lee Joon (이준), a special envoy of King Gojong who passed away on July 14, 1907. Lee Joon, along with fellow envoys Lee Sang-seol (이상설) and Lee Wi-jong (이위종), stayed at the De Jong Hotel during their mission to the Second International Peace Conference, which began on June 15, 1907. Unfortunately, they were unable to enter the conference due to Japanese interference, forcing them to advocate for Korea's sovereignty outside the venue. The 23-year-old Lee Wi-jong, fluent in English, French, and Russian, took the lead in delivering speeches and interviews, notably presenting 'A Plea for Korea.' 

Tragically, Lee Joon died suddenly in the hotel, initially reported as a suicide. The Daehan Maeil Shinbo reported on July 18 that he had taken his own life out of deep frustration, stating, 'He could not contain his loyal anger and thus sacrificed himself, shedding blood before the international envoys.' However, the Hwangseong Shinmun took a more cautious stance, suggesting that he had died from a self-inflicted wound. 

In 1962, the National Institute of Korean History concluded that Lee Joon's death was not a suicide but rather a result of a health issue that went untreated while he was abroad. His passing was attributed to a festering sore on his cheek, which could have been easily treated. Lee Sang-seol later lamented, 'It was a disease that could have been easily cured with just three doses of medicine.' 

Following Lee Joon's death, Japan used the incident as a pretext to dethrone King Gojong on July 19, replacing him with the puppet Emperor Sunjong (순종). Lee Joon was buried three days earlier at the Eikendaal Cemetery in The Hague. The Sunjong government sentenced Lee Sang-seol to death by hanging and imposed life sentences on Lee Joon and Lee Wi-jong, leaving them in a position where returning to their homeland was impossible. 

Lee Joon hailed from Bukcheong, Hamgyeong Province, and was a graduate of the first class of the Judicial Training Institute, Korea's first modern law school. He was a contemporary of Ham Tae-young (함태영), who later became the third Vice President of South Korea. Lee Joon was active in the Independence Club in 1896 and studied at Waseda University in Japan. 

In 1962, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation, and in 1963, his remains were returned to Korea after 55 years, where he was interred at the National Cemetery in Suyu-ri, Seoul.

A former aide claimed, "Whenever trash accumulated at her home, she would routinely take it down herself. The boxes contained leftover chicken, dumplings, and other mixed waste." 

Lee pressed Kang to clarify whether the evidence was false, demanding a straightforward answer. However, Kang requested more time to explain. 

Lee continued, stating, "This is just the tip of the iceberg," and mentioned that additional testimonies had emerged on an anonymous board for National Assembly aides. He listed various allegations against Kang, including directing aides to compare estimates for purchasing appliances, instructing them to buy luxury goods from department stores, and demanding personal services such as hotel pickups. He also mentioned receiving abusive text messages every ten minutes and requests for special treatment in airport security areas. Lee challenged Kang to specify which parts of these allegations were false, insisting she respond within 30 seconds. 

Kang replied, "I ask for your understanding to allow me time to explain." Lee countered, "I gave you 30 seconds; time is running out." 

Kang acknowledged that explaining everything in 30 seconds would be insufficient but promised to provide a detailed response. She refuted claims that she had no housekeeper, stating, "Reports claiming I made false statements about this are not true." 

When Lee pressed her again, asking if all the evidence and broadcasts were false, Kang requested the opportunity to continue her remarks. After Lee's questioning time ended, Kang elaborated, saying, "You asked if it was true or false, but I believe I need to explain the overall context for clarity." She mentioned that she had shown documents to ruling party members indicating that a housekeeper had been present in her home. 

Kang expressed concern that disclosing certain documents could harm the trust between her family and the housekeeper, fearing it could lead to negative consequences for her child and the housekeeper. 

Regarding the trash photos presented by the former aide, Kang explained, "There are various items related to filming or supplies prepared for office use, which I sometimes take down in boxes. I have also taken food I was eating the night before to eat in the car the next morning, and I acknowledge that leaving it in the car was my mistake." 

Kang concluded by apologizing to anyone who may have been hurt by the controversy, stating, "I sincerely apologize for any distress caused by my shortcomings."
