During the 2024 MBC Drama Awards, which aired on January 5, actress Chae Soo-bin added a meaningful touch to the event with her speech in sign language. The ceremony, hosted by broadcaster Kim Sung-joo and Chae Soo-bin, celebrated the achievements of actors, productions, and staff from MBC dramas over the past year.
Originally scheduled for a live broadcast on December 30, the awards ceremony was postponed due to a tragic incident involving a Jeju Air flight that resulted in the loss of 179 lives. The event was recorded privately and aired after the national mourning period, which concluded on January 4. As she accepted the award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series, Chae Soo-bin expressed her condolences.
In her speech, she reflected on her childhood dream of becoming an actress, stating, "It’s wonderful to experience different lives through acting. Each project feels like a gift, and it’s precious to know that this gift can provide comfort, joy, and happiness to others. I am grateful for the opportunity to share a heartbreaking love story through '지금 거신 전화는' (The Call You’re Making Right Now)."
Chae Soo-bin also expressed her gratitude to her fellow actors and staff, particularly mentioning her co-star Yoo Yeon-seok, whom she affectionately referred to as 'Yoo Dae-jang' on set. She thanked her agency, family, and friends, emphasizing, "I am here today because of all of you."
To conclude her speech, she utilized the sign language she learned for her role in the drama, saying, "I was happy to meet all of you through my character Hee-joo. Thank you for your love."
The MBC dramas aired in 2024 included titles such as '밤에 피는 꽃' (Flowers Blooming at Night), '원더풀 월드' (Wonderful World), '수사반장 1958' (Investigation Team Leader 1958), and '지금 거신 전화는' (The Call You’re Making Right Now). The nominees for the Grand Prize included Lee Ha-nee from '밤에 피는 꽃', Kim Nam-joo from '원더풀 월드', and Yoo Yeon-seok from '지금 거신 전화는', among others. Lee Ha-nee's drama achieved the highest viewership rating of 18.4%, making her a strong contender for the award.
