Cast of 'Trunk' Responds to Controversy Over Depiction of Prostitution

The Netflix original series 'Trunk' (트렁크), written by Park Eun-young and directed by Kim Kyu-tae, has faced sharp criticism for allegedly glamorizing prostitution. However, the lead actors have expressed that they do not feel discomfort regarding the show's themes.

The plot revolves around a mysterious trunk that appears by a lakeside, unveiling secrets and emotional turmoil. A temporary marriage service called NM plays a significant role in connecting the two main characters, leading to reactions questioning whether the contractual sexual relations depicted constitute prostitution.

While contract marriages have been a common theme in various works, 'Trunk' includes explicit references to sexual relations, such as characters expressing desires to sleep with one another, which has sparked viewer backlash. Additionally, the show features multiple characters, including Jung Won (공유) and Noh In-ji (서현진), as well as ex-spouses Lee Seo-yeon (정윤하) and Yoon Ji-o (조이건), all involved in similar contractual arrangements, raising concerns about unequal representation in intimate scenes.

Despite the controversy, the actors maintain that they were aware of the source material's nature and chose to participate after reviewing the script. Sharing his thoughts, Gong Yoo (공유) stated, "I personally don’t like formalities. The wording used in headlines about sexual content shocked me. I expected mixed reactions, but I believe the negative views are from a minority. When it premiered in over 190 countries, I anticipated diverse opinions, and I think it’s a fact that our intentions can be interpreted in various ways. I’m not dismissing negative perspectives, but many viewers saw it differently."

Similarly, Seo Hyun-jin (서현진) emphasized her focus on her character rather than the job's implications, stating, "I chose this script because I liked the character In-ji. I didn’t feel a strong aversion to it. Although In-ji’s job isn’t ordinary, her situation is unique, and I believe it’s necessary for her to maintain her home while waiting for Do-ha."

Both actors acknowledge that while the show may evoke discomfort among viewers, they seem detached from the surrounding controversy. The polarizing reception of 'Trunk' suggests deeper issues at play in its quiet decline.
