Cast of 'Harbin' Voices Strong Opinions Amid Political Turmoil

On December 18, a press conference for the film 'Harbin' was held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall, featuring cast members Hyun Bin (현빈), Jo Woo-jin (조우진), Jeon Yeo-been (전여빈), Park Hoon (박훈), Yoo Jae-myung (유재명), Lee Dong-wook (이동욱), and director Woo Min-ho (우민호). Park Jung-min (박정민) was unable to attend due to filming commitments.

'Harbin' (directed by Woo Min-ho and distributed by CJ ENM) is set in 1909 and depicts the intense pursuit and suspicion between those heading to Harbin for a common goal and those chasing them. This film marks another collaboration between director Woo and Hive Media Corp, known for their previous work on 'The Drug King' and 'Inside Men'.

The film's themes resonate deeply with the current political climate in South Korea, particularly following the recent declaration of martial law by the president and the subsequent impeachment protests. The cast and director did not shy away from addressing sensitive questions linking the film to the ongoing political situation.

Director Woo Min-ho shared, "I started planning this film about three years ago. My previous works often focused on villains and critiqued modern Korean history. This time, I wanted to create a piece dedicated to those who sacrificed for our country. I researched figures like Ahn Jung-geun and the independence fighters. Ahn was only 30 at the time, and most were in their 20s and 30s. I wanted to understand what drove these young individuals to dedicate themselves to such a cause." He expressed gratitude and remorse, visibly moved.

After regaining his composure, Woo added, "I hope this film provides comfort and strength to viewers. Even though we are navigating through chaotic times, I believe we will overcome and feel a sense of pride."

Hyun Bin, who plays Ahn Jung-geun, remarked, "In our film, Ahn and his comrades faced numerous hardships but persevered with conviction, ultimately achieving positive outcomes. I believe that if we unite and take steps forward, a better tomorrow awaits us."

He also highlighted the film's poster, which features the phrase 'For A Better Tomorrow', stating, "This message resonates strongly with us right now. I hope many find strength from our film."

Jo Woo-jin, portraying Kim Sang-hyun, expressed, "I see 'Harbin' as a journey for those dreaming of a better tomorrow. Many are currently preparing and taking action for a brighter future. I hope our film serves as a heartfelt prayer for those individuals."

Jeon Yeo-been, who plays the only female independence fighter, Gong Bu-in, stated, "Like the meaning of 'Gwangbok' (restoration of light), the independence fighters in Harbin moved forward step by step, even when faced with adversity. I want our film to contribute to a better democracy and support the citizens enduring this chaotic period."

When asked about her role, she added, "Even if historical figures are not recorded as heroes, I aimed to remember each individual who united during times of national crisis. While the film is set a century ago, I believe the sentiments are still relevant today."

Park Hoon, who plays Mori Tatsuo, reflected on the director's heartfelt message, saying, "If our film can provide strength to those struggling to take their first steps, I would be grateful. The opening scene shows Ahn Jung-geun taking painstaking steps across a fragile river, which symbolizes the struggles many face today."

Yoo Jae-myung shared his personal experience watching the film, stating, "I felt a strange connection to the historical events depicted. It was as if I was living alongside those individuals, feeling their emotions. I hope this film encourages reflection on our past and our responsibilities."

In closing, Jeon Yeo-been expressed her gratitude for being part of a project created with sincerity and passion. Director Woo encouraged everyone not to give up, stating, "If you keep moving forward step by step, good results will surely come."

'Harbin' is set to hit theaters on December 24.
