Calls for Action Against YouTuber Following Kim Sae-ron's Tragic Death

Following the tragic passing of actress 고 김새론, it has come to light that she suffered distress due to personal exposure by a YouTuber who is a former entertainment journalist. This revelation has sparked a growing demand for stricter regulations on such content creators. As of March 13, a petition titled 'Request for Strong Legislative Action to Prevent Celebrity Suicides Due to YouTube Channel Activities of Entertainment Journalists' has garnered over 46,000 signatures on the National Assembly's electronic petition site. The petitioner, identified as A, emphasized that the harassment of celebrities through YouTube channels has become a significant social issue, citing the recent suicide of another young actress as a tragic consequence of this behavior. The petition was registered last month, following Kim Sae-ron's death on February 16, and condemns the actions of the YouTuber who exposed her private life. A pointed out that the trend of entertainment journalists creating personal YouTube channels to share behind-the-scenes stories and current issues is increasing, leading to serious social repercussions. They argued that while traditional media would have self-regulated due to ethical concerns, YouTube allows such stalking-like behavior to continue unchecked in pursuit of public interest. A called for the establishment of basic qualifications for YouTubers and the creation of regulations comparable to those governing traditional media. Kim Sae-ron was found deceased at her home, and her family has claimed that she endured significant suffering due to the actions of certain YouTubers. The YouTuber in question has denied the allegations, stating that claims of harassment are unfounded and that they have sufficient evidence to refute them. The petition will remain open until March 26, and if it receives over 50,000 signatures, it will be formally submitted to the relevant committees in the National Assembly.
