BTS's Jungkook Apologizes for Wearing Controversial Hat

Jungkook (정국) of BTS (방탄소년단) has issued an apology after wearing a hat with a controversial slogan. In a post on the fan communication platform Weverse early on June 14, he expressed his regret, stating, "I feel heavy-hearted writing this after meeting you all again after a long time. I sincerely apologize for disappointing and causing discomfort to many due to the phrase on the hat I wore during rehearsal today."
The incident occurred during a private rehearsal for J-Hope's (제이홉) encore concert 'HOPE ON THE STAGE FINAL' held at the Goyang Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province. The hat, which featured the phrase "MAKE TOKYO GREAT AGAIN," drew criticism as it is reminiscent of the far-right slogan "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN" popularized by former U.S. President Donald Trump. This phrase has become associated with far-right supporters and is particularly sensitive in South Korea, given the historical context of Japanese colonial rule.
Jungkook acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, "I take full responsibility for not adequately understanding the historical and political implications of the phrase before wearing it. I am truly sorry. There is no excuse for my carelessness. I will think more deeply and act more responsibly in the future."
He also mentioned that he would humbly accept all criticism regarding his mistake and confirmed that the hat has been disposed of. Jungkook recently completed his military service, having enlisted on December 12, 2023, and was discharged on June 11, 2025.
