Box Office Success: 'Hitman 2' Surpasses 1 Million Viewers During Lunar New Year

The films '검은수녀들' (The Black Nuns), '히트맨2' (Hitman 2), and '말할 수 없는 비밀' (Secret That Cannot Be Told) have taken the box office by storm since their January releases, capitalizing on the Lunar New Year holiday. As of January 29, the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing system reported that 'Hitman 2' has surpassed 1 million viewers by 7 AM on the same day. This achievement marks it as the first film of 2025 to reach this milestone, matching the pace of the 2024 hit '소방관' (Firefighter), which also crossed the 1 million mark in just eight days.

'Hitman 2' has claimed the top spot at the box office for two consecutive days and stands out as the only comedy among the Lunar New Year releases, making it a family-friendly option that appeals to friends and acquaintances alike. The film is gaining traction through positive word-of-mouth, making it a popular choice for audiences during the holiday.

Starring 송혜교 (Song Hye-kyo) and 전여빈 (Jeon Yeo-been), 'The Black Nuns' attracted 130,868 viewers on January 28, securing the second position at the box office. With a cumulative audience of 899,471, it is on track to surpass 1 million viewers today if it maintains its audience numbers.

'The Black Nuns' tells the story of individuals who embark on a forbidden ritual to save a boy possessed by a powerful evil spirit. This film shares a universe with director 장재현's (Jang Jae-hyun) previous work '검은 사제들' (The Priests), and it captivates audiences with its fresh themes and unpredictable plot twists.

Released on January 27, 'Secret That Cannot Be Told' is also making waves as a latecomer in the box office race. The film, based on a popular Taiwanese movie, marks 도경수's (Doh Kyung-soo) first foray into the romance genre, drawing significant attention. It has accumulated 94,358 viewers, placing it third in the box office rankings. Although it is a late entry, its delayed release may lead to a longer box office run.

On its opening day, 'Secret That Cannot Be Told' achieved impressive ratings, including a CGV Golden Egg Index of 98%, a Lotte Cinema audience score of 9.8, a Megabox real viewer score of 9.2, a Naver real viewer score of 9.78, and a Daum score of 9.9, making it the top-rated film among Lunar New Year releases, raising expectations for its future box office performance.
