Ballad King Byun Jin-sub Reflects on His Glory Days

On May 18, 2025, renowned singer Byun Jin-sub, often referred to as the 'Ballad King,' showcased his impressive career during the 306th episode of KBS 2TV's variety show, 'Boss's Ears Are Donkey Ears' (사장님 귀는 당나귀 귀). The episode featured a glimpse into his massive house and a discussion about his peak popularity in the 1990s.

Byun Jin-sub rose to fame with his debut album, winning both the Rookie of the Year and Grand Prize awards, which sparked a ballad craze in South Korea. He reminisced, stating, "During my peak, I earned 2 billion won from album sales in just one year," and added, "Back then, I could easily buy two luxury cars like the Grandeur. My popularity was on par with today's BTS. I was BJS!"

In a nod to the current generation, he dubbed Melomance's Kim Min-seok as the 'Prince of Ballads.'

The episode also revealed Byun Jin-sub's expansive home, which includes a spacious dance practice room designed for his second son, Byun Jae-jun. Reports suggest that during Jae-jun's rehearsal for a collaborative performance, Byun Jin-sub's perfectionist tendencies led to some intense moments of fatherly critique.

Byun Jin-sub debuted in 1987 with the album 'Being Alone' and has since been celebrated for hits like 'To You Again,' 'Like the Birds,' 'Hope,' 'Laura,' and 'To a Lady.'
