Asian Journalists Call for Restoration of Democracy in South Korea

On March 4, the Asian Journalists Association held a press conference at the Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, where they announced a statement signed by 1,000 journalists from across Asia, expressing their desire for the restoration of democracy in South Korea amidst the ongoing martial law and impeachment issues. The statement urged the ruling party and the major opposition party in South Korea to rise above political self-interest and act as a united entity, emphasizing the need for mutual concessions and understanding. It also called for the demonstration of national unity through six specific points, highlighting the hope that South Korea's turbulent situation would be resolved swiftly, paving the way for advanced democracy and exemplary leadership that could serve as a model for Asia. The press conference was attended by key figures including Sophal Chhay, President of the Asian Journalists Association, Vice Presidents Eddie Suprapto and Kang Seok-jae, and founding President Lee Sang-ki. The association plans to continue gathering solidarity signatures from journalists in over 30 Asian member countries, including Cambodia, the president country, and South Korea, the vice president country, to support the restoration of democracy in South Korea.
