Anticipation Grows for Squid Game Season 3 Following Season 2's Success

The Netflix original series Squid Game (오징어 게임), directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, continues to enjoy immense popularity despite mixed reviews for its second season. On January 1, Netflix unveiled a special teaser poster for Season 3 on social media.

The poster features the iconic Young-hee doll, equipped with sensors to detect movement during the 'Mugunghwa Kkot-i Pieot-seumnida' game, alongside the Cheolsu doll that appeared in the post-credits scene of Season 2's finale. The two dolls are staring directly at the viewer, leading fans to speculate about the introduction of new games in the upcoming season.

The name Cheolsu is a common name in Korea, often paired with Young-hee, as seen in elementary school textbooks. Additionally, some fans are speculating that Season 3 might premiere on June 27, as there were claims that the teaser video included a message stating, 'Watch Squid Game 3 on Netflix June 27.' However, this information has since been removed. Netflix has confirmed that Season 3 is set to be released later this year.

Squid Game 2, which premiered on December 26, achieved a staggering 68 million views during the fourth week of December (23-29), breaking the record for the most views in a non-English TV series during its debut week on Netflix. The previous record was held by Wednesday (웬즈데이) Season 1, which garnered 50.1 million views.

Despite the mixed reviews, the show's prior popularity has kept viewers engaged, and various rumors continue to circulate. Squid Game 2 follows the story of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the winner of the first season, as he returns to face off against the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). This season serves as a bridge to the highly anticipated Season 3, which is expected to be released this year.
