Anthony Mackie and Julius Onah Discuss the New Journey of Captain America

On February 5, 2025, an online press conference was held for the upcoming film 'Captain America: Brave New World' (캡틴 아메리카: 브레이브 뉴 월드), featuring actor Anthony Mackie and director Julius Onah. They shared their excitement about the new chapter in the Captain America saga.

In 'Captain America: Brave New World', Sam Wilson, played by Mackie, finds himself at the center of an international crisis after reuniting with Thaddeus Ross, who has become president. The film follows Sam as he uncovers a sinister plot aimed at taking over the world.

Mackie expressed his disbelief at stepping into the role of Captain America, stating, "I never thought I would be Captain America. I can't hide my excitement. As a young actor, I never dreamed I would reach such heights, and it’s a great honor to be part of this journey."

He elaborated on Sam Wilson's character, saying, "In the context of the MCU and the role Captain America plays now, Sam Wilson is the perfect character. His sense of justice, warmth, and passion make him worthy of the shield, which is why Steve Rogers passed it on to him."

When asked about the differences between Sam Wilson's Captain America and previous iterations, Mackie noted, "The biggest difference is that Sam has not taken the Super Soldier serum. He must rely on humanity and empathy to overcome challenges. He can't solve problems with brute force; he has to engage directly. When we first meet Sam in 'The Winter Soldier', he was a counselor and a reliable friend to Steve Rogers. He embodies trust, humanity, and camaraderie."

Mackie also addressed the pressure of following in Chris Evans' footsteps, sharing, "When I read the script and saw that I would be the new Captain America, Chris was there to hug me and tell me I would do great. That was all I needed to hear. I didn’t feel burdened because Sam Wilson is a completely different character from Steve Rogers, and he will embark on a unique journey. Steve recognizes Sam's worth and acknowledges him by passing the shield. For Sam, that acknowledgment is freeing. Now, we will see Sam Wilson ready to take on the role of the new Captain America."

Director Julius Onah expressed his enthusiasm for introducing Mackie's Captain America and sharing his story. He believes audiences will deeply connect with Sam's journey and experiences as he faces adversity. "Sam Wilson's strength lies in his humanity and warm heart. Throughout his journey, we will experience it from his perspective. I think everyone will feel inspired by the interactions between Sam and Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford."

Onah emphasized the importance of the theme that everyone has a good heart, ensuring that this message is evident in both action sequences and dramatic moments. He expressed pride in working with Mackie and is confident that Korean audiences will enjoy the film.

The director also mentioned drawing inspiration from various films, particularly political thrillers and conspiracy films from the 1970s, such as 'The Day of the Jackal' and 'Point Blank'. He aimed to create a unique texture and atmosphere reminiscent of classic cinema while ensuring that Sam's journey is felt throughout the film.

Mackie highlighted the importance of showcasing the enhanced capabilities of the new Captain America's suit, which features upgraded functions, including wings. He stated, "The sequences I perform are dramatic and exaggerated, embodying the idea that the best defense is a good offense. When the new Captain America decides to fight, he must be an attacker, not just a defender."

Onah added that it is crucial for the new Captain America to be an attacker, especially since he has not taken the serum. He humorously recounted a scene where he encouraged Mackie to hit someone with a brick, which led to a memorable moment in the film. He also noted that the use of a brick pays homage to a scene from the Korean film 'A Bittersweet Life', reflecting his admiration for Korean cinema.

Mackie concluded by stating that Sam Wilson represents the best aspects of humanity and encourages viewers to consider how they can contribute positively to the world. He emphasized that Sam's journey is not just about succeeding Steve Rogers but establishing his own identity as Captain America. Onah echoed this sentiment, stating that Sam's integrity and strength will resonate with many and inspire audiences, promising a film filled with enjoyment and inspiration.
