Andong's Manhyujeong Survives Wildfire Damage
The historic site of Manhyujeong (晩休亭) in Andong, known for its appearance in the drama 'Mr. Sunshine,' has been confirmed to have suffered minimal damage from recent wildfires. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on March 26, 2025, that the area previously thought to be lost was actually unharmed, with only minor scorch marks found on some pine trees. Officials reported that around 40 personnel from Andong City, the North Gyeongsang Province Care Center, and the fire department applied fire-retardant materials to the wooden structures of Manhyujeong and watered nearby areas to prevent further risk.
Manhyujeong was built by the Joseon-era scholar Kim Gye-haeng (1431–1517) as a retreat during his later years. After passing the state examination at the age of 49, he began his official career in his fifties and retired to Andong at 71. The name Manhyujeong reflects the characters for 'late' (晩) and 'rest' (休), symbolizing a place of tranquility amidst the scenic valleys and waterfalls surrounding it. The pavilion is designated as a cultural heritage site in North Gyeongsang Province and was recognized as a scenic area, 'Andong Manhyujeong Garden,' in 2011.
The site gained popularity as a tourist destination after a memorable line from 'Mr. Sunshine,' where the character Eugene (Lee Byung-hun) professes his love to Ae-shin (Kim Tae-ri) with the words, 'Let’s do it. Love. Together with me.'
