Adult Transportation Card Fare Increases to 1550 Won

Starting from June 28, the fare for the metropolitan subway system connecting Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon will rise to 1550 won for adults, an increase of 150 won from the previous fare of 1400 won. According to the Seoul city government, the new fare structure will also see youth fares increase to 900 won and children's fares to 550 won, marking increases of 100 won and 50 won respectively.

For cash payments, the fares will be 1650 won for both adults and youth, reflecting a 150 won increase, while children's fares will rise by 50 won to 550 won.

Passengers can benefit from an early bird discount if they tap their transportation cards between the first train and 6:30 AM, with discounted fares set at 1240 won for adults, 720 won for youth, and 440 won for children. These early morning discount rates will also see increases of 120 won, 80 won, and 40 won respectively.

The fare adjustments are the result of discussions among the Seoul city government, Gyeonggi Province, Incheon City, and Korail. Initially, the city planned to raise subway fares by 300 won in 2023, following public hearings and consultations with the Seoul City Council and the Price Policy Committee. However, in line with the government's freeze on public utility rates, the increase was split into two increments of 150 won each. The first increment was implemented in 2023, while the second was postponed due to the upcoming general elections. This second increment will now take effect with the new fare changes.
