Action Star Jet Li Returns to Wuxia Films After 14 Years

Renowned Chinese action star Jet Li (리롄제, 李连杰) is making a comeback to the wuxia genre after a 14-year hiatus. According to the China Movie Channel's Fusion Media Center on May 23, Li has completed filming for the movie 'Biao Ren: Feng Ji Da Mo' (표인: 풍기대막), directed by the acclaimed martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (위안허핑, 袁和平). At 62 years old, this marks Li's first leading role in a martial arts film since 'The Sorcerer and the White Snake' (용문비갑) in 2011.

Li made his debut in the 1982 film 'Shaolin Temple' (소림사) and became a leading figure in the golden age of Hong Kong martial arts cinema with iconic roles in films like 'Once Upon a Time in China' (황비홍), 'Fong Sai-yuk' (동방불패), and 'The Legend of the Condor Heroes' (의천도룡기). However, his career faced challenges after being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in 2010, which led to a temporary hiatus. Additionally, injuries sustained during his youth from performing high-intensity stunts resulted in a grade 3 disability assessment in 2017. His absence from public appearances even sparked rumors about his death.

Since 'The Sorcerer and the White Snake,' Li has primarily appeared in supporting roles in Hollywood films, including Disney's live-action 'Mulan' (2020). His long-awaited return in 'Biao Ren: Feng Ji Da Mo' is based on a popular Chinese martial arts comic, featuring a bodyguard undertaking a perilous mission across the desert, with significant portions filmed in the Xinjiang (신장) desert of China.
