A New Take on Shakespeare's Tragedy: The Play 'Witches'

The play 'Witches', a reimagining of Shakespeare's four great tragedies, particularly 'Macbeth', is set to premiere on the 28th of this month at the Seondol Theater in Daehakro, Seoul.

This production marks the sixth work by the creative group 성찬파 (Seongchanpa), focusing on the desires and guilt of the three witches alongside the character of Macbeth.

The performance promises a dense 100 minutes of uninterrupted acting. Leading the cast is Kim Jae-man, who returns to the role of Macbeth after an eight-year hiatus since the 2016 opera-theater production of 'Macbeth'. The role of Hecate will be played by Jo Eun-young, known for her work with 극단 이룸 (Theater Irum) and 극단 더늠 (Theater The Neum), and her performances in 'Gaze' and 'Iron Point'.

Moon Hana, recognized for her roles in 'Hexagonal Human' and 'Macbeth of Lady', will portray the character of Weird Sisters, while Lee Jin-hee, who gained critical acclaim for her performance in the play 'Darkness', will take on the role of Greymoore, recently awarded for her acting at the 2024 Seoul Assitej Winter Festival.

According to 성찬파 (Seongchanpa), the script is penned by emerging playwright Choo Tae-young, with Park Seong-chan handling adaptation and direction. The production features the delicate choreography of Yang Eun-sook, lyrical music by music director Bae Mi-jin, and a talented creative team including lighting designer Kim Jong-seok, costume designer Kim Jeong-hyang, and makeup designer Shin Na-na, all collaborating seamlessly to bring this vision to life.
