2024 MBC Acting Awards Set to Air After Tragic Incident

The '2024 MBC Acting Awards' (MBC 연기대상) will finally be broadcast today, January 5, at 5:10 PM KST, after being postponed due to the tragic Jeju Air incident. The awards ceremony, originally scheduled for live broadcast on December 30, was changed to a recorded format following the accident that occurred on December 29 at Muan International Airport, where Jeju Air flight 7C2216 crashed during landing, resulting in the deaths of 179 out of 181 passengers. The government declared a national mourning period lasting seven days, ending on January 4.

The entertainment industry has been deeply affected by this tragedy, leading to the cancellation of year-end award shows, concerts, and various entertainment programs. Many celebrities expressed their condolences through social media, and some have made donations to aid recovery efforts.

MBC had initially canceled the 'Broadcast Entertainment Awards' scheduled for the same day as the accident but decided to proceed with the 'Acting Awards' and 'Music Awards Festival' on December 30 and 31, respectively, in a recorded format.

With the national mourning period concluded, viewers can finally discover the winners of the 'Acting Awards.' On December 17, MBC revealed the nominees, which include Lee Ha-nee (이하늬) for her role in 'Flowers Bloom at Night' (밤에 피는 꽃), Kim Nam-joo (김남주) for 'Wonderful World' (원더풀 월드), and Lee Je-hoon (이제훈) for 'Investigation Team 1958' (수사반장 1958).

Other nominees include Kim Hee-sun (김희선) for 'Our Home' (우리, 집), Byun Yo-han (변요한) for 'Death to Snow White - Black Out' (백설공주에게 죽음을-Black Out), Han Suk-kyu (한석규) for 'The Close Betrayer' (이토록 친밀한 배신자), and Yoo Yeon-seok (유연석) for 'The Call You Are Making' (지금 거신 전화는).

As fans speculate on who will take home the top award, Han Suk-kyu and Lee Ha-nee are considered strong contenders.
