'Golden Wave' is set to make its next stop in Bangkok. The 'Golden Wave in Bangkok' concert will take place on March 22 at the Thunder Dome in Thailand. Following successful events in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, last April and Tokyo, Japan, in October, this concert aims to engage global audiences once again.

The lineup features a stellar array of beloved K-Pop stars, showcasing a mix of idol groups and solo artists who will perform exclusive stages tailored for the Bangkok event. Confirmed performers include MINNIE, ENHYPEN, YOUNGJAE, EVNNE, KISS OF LIFE, WHIB, and TWS (in alphabetical order). Notably, Thai K-Pop idols MINNIE from (G)I-DLE and Natti from KISS OF LIFE will return to their homeland for this special occasion.

Three members of the KBS drama production team have been referred to the prosecution for allegedly damaging the cultural heritage site, Byeongsan Seowon, located in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The Andong police announced on February 10, 2025, that the individuals, including a member identified as A, were charged with violating laws related to the preservation and utilization of cultural heritage. The incident occurred on December 30, 2024, when they reportedly hammered nails into various structures within Byeongsan Seowon, including the pavilion known as Mandae-ru (晩對樓) and the pillars of Dongjae (東齋), which served as dormitories for scholars.

The crew's actions were intended to hang lanterns, a lighting prop for their filming. A passing tourist witnessed the act and reported it to the city of Andong, which subsequently filed a complaint against the production team with the police. Following the incident, KBS issued an apology and announced the complete destruction of all footage filmed at Byeongsan Seowon.

Byeongsan Seowon was established in 1575 by the scholar Ryu Seong-ryong (서애 류성룡), who played a significant role during the Imjin War and authored the reflective work 'Jingbirok' (징비록). After Ryu's death, the site was renamed Byeongsan Seowon in 1614 when his spirit tablet was enshrined there. It was designated as a Confucian academy by royal decree in 1863 and was recognized as Historic Site No. 260 in 1978. In 2010, it became part of Hahoe Folk Village, and in 2019, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under 'Korean Seowon.'

On September 15, 2022, former MBC weathercaster Oh Yo-Anna tragically took her own life, leaving behind a 2022 income statement that showed earnings of less than 20 million won. This document revealed no employment income, only business income, indicating that she was classified as a self-employed individual rather than an employee of MBC. Under tax law, she was subject to a 3.3% withholding tax on her business income. While many refer to individuals like Oh as 'freelancers,' the reality is that they often work under conditions similar to traditional employees, lacking the protections afforded to them.

Oh's death went unnoticed for three months until her family claimed that workplace bullying contributed to her decision to end her life, alleging that MBC had concealed this information. Following these revelations, MBC issued a statement on January 28, 2023, which drew criticism for failing to express condolences and instead focusing on external forces disrupting the company. MBC emphasized Oh's status as a freelancer, stating that she had never reported her grievances to management.

Had Oh been classified as a regular employee with a labor contract, she would have been protected under laws against workplace harassment. If the allegations of bullying were true, those responsible could have faced fines, and if MBC had concealed the issue or retaliated against her, they could have faced criminal charges. Furthermore, she would have been entitled to benefits from industrial accident insurance, as workplace harassment is considered an occupational hazard. However, the ambiguity surrounding her status as a freelancer left her without these protections.

Oh was publicly hired by MBC as a weathercaster in May 2021, which inherently suggested her employee status. However, MBC did not view her as an employee from the outset. In a YouTube video she recorded, she confirmed receiving a notification from MBC stating she was selected as a 'freelance weathercaster in training.'

She worked according to a schedule set by the company, received work instructions, and was subject to management oversight, which her family argues indicates a subordinate relationship rather than a true freelance arrangement. A family member noted that Oh suffered from depression and insomnia due to workplace bullying, leading her to rely on alcohol to sleep, which resulted in tardiness and a reduction in her broadcasting duties.

The working conditions for weathercasters, as described by an anonymous current weathercaster, reveal that nearly all are under freelance contracts, receiving pay per report. While the specifics of work directives may vary by broadcaster, the scheduling is entirely controlled by the company. This creates a situation where the supposed independence of freelancers is undermined by the reality of their working conditions.

The issue of 'fake freelancers' is not limited to the broadcasting industry. An estimated 8 million workers in South Korea are believed to be in similar precarious positions. According to a report by the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee, the number of non-wage workers, who are subject to the 3.3% withholding tax, has been steadily increasing, with 8.47 million recorded in 2022, of which 8.35 million did not have business registration.

Many workers have reported similar experiences during their job searches. A survey conducted by the online union 'Workplace Abuse 119' found that 27.4% of respondents had signed freelance contracts, with 65.3% stating they worked under direct supervision. This lack of a formal labor contract leaves them without access to severance pay, paid leave, or industrial accident insurance.

One case involved a 56-year-old woman named Shin, who worked as a cook for two and a half years before injuring her leg in an accident. Despite her employer's promise to cover medical expenses, she received only a termination certificate stating her freelance contract had ended, with no severance or industrial accident insurance coverage.

The prevalence of 'fake 3.3' contracts raises questions about labor rights in South Korea. The family of Oh Yo-Anna is advocating for the creation of the 'Oh Yo-Anna Law' to protect those who are effectively deprived of their labor rights under the guise of freelance work. Lawmakers are being urged to address these issues in relevant committees, highlighting the urgent need for reform in labor protections for freelancers.

The Tragic Case of Former MBC Weathercaster Oh Yo-Anna: A Reflection on Freelance Labor Rights

Broadcaster Jang Seong-kyu has taken to social media to address accusations that he ignored workplace bullying incidents involving the late Oh Yoanna. Following a wave of negative comments, he directly replied to critics on the YouTube channel 'Garo Sero Research Institute' on February 8. In his comment, he expressed frustration, stating, "Thanks to my brother Se-yi (Kim Se-yi, the head of Garo Sero Research Institute), I've been called a murderer and have received messages telling my sons to take their own lives." He added a thumbs-up emoji, sarcastically acknowledging the influence of Se-yi.

Jang emphasized his respect for Se-yi's lifestyle but requested corrections to the facts once they are clarified. He also wished everyone a happy new year and asked for information about an MBC employee who allegedly provided false information during a phone call.

The controversy began after the channel released a recording of a conversation with an MBC official on January 31, suggesting that Jang had overlooked the bullying suffered by Oh. Although he initially denied the allegations, the ongoing backlash prompted him to respond to comments on the channel.

In response to a question about why he did not attend Oh's funeral, Jang explained that it was intentionally kept private, which upset him. He also mentioned that he would resolve issues with the MBC employee over drinks and clarified that the criticism directed at him was not solely due to Kim Se-yi but also because his name was mentioned in a group chat among weathercasters.

When a netizen targeted weathercaster Kim Ga-young, who was implicated in the bullying allegations, Jang retorted, warning that spreading falsehoods could lead to serious consequences.

On February 5, Jang had previously denied the allegations on his Instagram, stating that while he was hurt by the initial mention of his name, he chose to remain silent out of respect for the deceased and their family. However, as negative comments escalated, including those targeting his family, he felt compelled to limit his engagement with the comments.

He shared screenshots of some of the hateful messages he received, which included accusations of murder and threats against his children. Jang expressed that seeking to clear his name before addressing the late Oh's injustices was misguided and pleaded for restraint regarding comments about his family until the situation is resolved.

It has been 18 years since the beloved actress Jeong Da-bin, often referred to as the 'Second Choi Jin-sil' for her vibrant charm, tragically passed away. On February 10, 2007, she was found dead in her boyfriend's apartment in Samseong-dong, Gangnam, Seoul. While the police and the National Forensic Service concluded that her death was a suicide based on the autopsy, her family and agency have consistently argued that there was no reason for her to take her own life. In a 2018 MBC special titled 'Again, Twenty - New Nonstop,' Jo In-sung expressed his difficulty in attending her funeral, stating, 'It was hard to go to the mortuary. My heart was too pained. I felt so sorry that I wondered if I had the right to go. But I thought I should at least say goodbye on my way there.' 

Similarly, Jung Tae-woo reflected on the disbelief surrounding her death, saying, 'Everyone must have felt it was unbelievable. It was so hard to accept that Da-bin was gone. She had family and colleagues around her. We had good memories together. I still find myself talking to the air every time articles about her come out.'
