107-Year-Old Victim of Forced Labor to Receive Compensation from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

In a landmark ruling, a 107-year-old man, Kim Han-soo, is set to receive 100 million won from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for his suffering as a forced laborer during the Japanese occupation of Korea. The Seoul Central District Court's Civil Appeals Division overturned a previous ruling that had dismissed Kim's claim, declaring that he is entitled to compensation. Kim, who was unable to attend the court due to his advanced age, was forcibly conscripted to work at a Mitsubishi shipyard for 15 months starting in July 1944. He expressed his anguish over being treated inhumanely, questioning why he had to endure such suffering. The initial ruling in February 2022 had denied his claim, citing the expiration of the statute of limitations based on a Supreme Court decision from 2012. However, the Supreme Court later clarified that the statute of limitations should be calculated from a 2018 ruling, which means Kim's claim is still valid. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has indicated plans to appeal this latest decision, bringing the case back to the Supreme Court for final judgment.
