107-Year-Old Korean Man Wins Compensation from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries After 80 Years

In a landmark ruling, a 107-year-old man, Kim Han-soo, is set to receive 100 million won from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for damages related to forced labor during Japan's colonial rule. The Seoul Central District Court overturned a previous ruling that had dismissed his claim, recognizing his right to compensation. Kim, who was forcibly conscripted to work at a shipyard operated by Mitsubishi from July 1944 for 15 months, expressed the emotional toll of his experience, questioning why he was treated inhumanely. The initial ruling in February 2022 had denied his claim, citing the expiration of the statute of limitations based on a 2012 Supreme Court decision that recognized the rights of forced labor victims. However, the court later clarified that the statute of limitations should be calculated from a 2018 ruling, allowing Kim's case to proceed. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has indicated plans to appeal the decision, bringing the case to the Supreme Court for a final judgment.
