100% Pass Rate for Mandela Youth School Candidates in National Exam

On May 8, the Ministry of Justice announced that 330 inmates participated in the first national high school equivalency exam of 2025, held across 20 correctional facilities last month. Out of these, 261 inmates passed, resulting in a pass rate of 79.1%, an increase of 7.3 percentage points from last year's 71.8%. Among those who passed, 25 were students from the 'Mandela Youth School' at the Seoul Southern Correctional Facility, achieving a perfect pass rate of 100%. The Mandela Youth School, which opened in March 2023, is a dedicated facility for young inmates aged 14 to 17, preparing them for both the equivalency exam and the college entrance exam. Since its inception, all 83 students who have taken the exam have successfully passed. One student, identified as Jo, who scored an average of 94 points on the high school equivalency exam, expressed, 'I made mistakes that brought me here, but I am studying hard to ensure this time is not wasted. I have found hope for my future and life goals.' A representative from the Ministry of Justice stated, 'We will strengthen various educational programs, including academic qualifications, to help inmates reintegrate into society successfully after their release.' Over the past decade, a total of 5,061 inmates have passed the equivalency exam.
