Understanding the past tense is essential for communicating effectively in Korean. It allows you to describe actions or states that have occurred in the past, share experiences, and tell stories.
This lesson will guide you through the formation and usage of the past tense in Korean, including regular and irregular verbs, with examples and practice exercises.
Regular verbs
Let's start by a simple step-by-step guide to teach you how to conjugate regular verbs in past tense:
- Identify the Stem: Remove the '다' ending from the dictionary form to get the stem.
- 가다 (to go) → 가
- 먹다 (to eat) → 먹
- 예쁘다 (to be pretty) → 예쁘
- Use the Appropriate Suffix: The suffix depends on the final vowel of the stem.
- Stem Ends with a Vowel:
- Just add -ㅆ (ex: 가다 - 가 - 갔).
- Stem Ends with a Consonant:
- If the last vowel is 아 or 오, add -았.
- For all other vowels, add -었.
- Stem Ends with 하:
- replace it by -했 (also rarely changed to -하였)
- Stem Ends with a Vowel:
- Attach the Polite Ending: For polite informal speech, commonly used endings are:
- -어 for casual speech
- -어요 for polite speech
- -습니다 for formal speech
- 갔어가다 (반말)
- 봤어보다 (반말)
- 느렸어요느리다 (존뎃말)
- 먹었어요먹다 (존뎃말)
- 했습니다하다 (높임말)
For verbs like 느리다, don't forget that 이 + 어 = 여.
느리다 -> 느리 + 었어요 -> 느렸어요.
For verbs like 보다, don't forget that 오 + 아 = 와.
보다 -> 보 + 았어요 -> 봤어요.

The conjugation of irregular verbs follows the pattern of the present tense.
